The inaugural function of the SIES Institute of Chromatography and Spectroscopy will be held on December 18, 2013 at SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS) Auditorium, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The function will be inaugurated by Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and Dr GD Yadav, Vice-Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai will preside over the function.
The welcome address will be given by V Shankar, President, SIES, which will be followed by a lecture about SIES-ICS by Dr G Ramakrishnan. The chief guest for the function will be Prof Dr GD Yadav, Vice-Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and the vote of thanks will be given by Jayaraman R Iyer, Chief Executive Officer, SIES.
Dr G Ramakrishnan, SIES-ICS will speak on ‘Chromatography & Spectroscopy Techniques touching your Life’; Dr S Narasimhan, Asthagiri Herbal Research Foundation, Chennai will speak on ‘Application of Chromatography & Spectroscopy in Natural Products – Isolation & Characterization’; Dr S Chattopadhyaya, Head, Bio-Organic division, BARC-Bombay will talk about ‘Application of Chromatography & Spectroscopy in Organic Synthesis’ and Dr S Gokulakrishnan, Business Manager, Perkin Elmer, India will speak on ‘Recent Advances in FTIR, FTIR-Microscopy and FTIR- Imaging in Material Characterization’.
Chromatography is an axle that traverses through every chemical industry and it touches our life every way. Once the science and practice of chromatography techniques are understood there will be many opportunities that will unfold in building a strong career in academics and industry.
The SIES Institute of Chromatography and Spectroscopy has been founded to subserve the basic objective of rekindling the interest in pure sciences. In the first phase the centre will have GC, GCMS, HPLC, UV-VIS, FT-IR and FT-IR Microscopy. Headspace accessory will be available for use both with GC and GCMS. The mass spectrometer will have capability to work both in EI and CI modes. The HPLC will be equipped with Diode Array Detector that will help in impurity profiling. LCMSMS will be added in the near future.
The instruments will be primarily used for training undergraduates and postgraduates of SIES colleges and this will be also extended to students of other colleges periodically. The staff members pursuing research and PhD degree will have access to these instruments as per their requirements.
The SIES Institute of Environment Management will be able to use these instruments for its research projects. The School of Packaging will be able to use these instruments in the analysis of packaging materials and the students of this department will also get an opportunity to study the use of these instruments in their domain. Periodical trainings will be extended to chemists from the industry.
Perkin Elmer India is actively involved in setting up of this institute and they are providing the required technical support in maintenance and are also committed to several training courses in the future. Chromatographic Society of India would also work with the institute to conduct relevant short duration educational courses in chromatography.
