There are plans to open 50,000 such stores over a five-year period

The generic drugs that would be made available at ‘Jan Aushadhi’ stores across the country would be made available at 20-30 per cent cost of its actual market price, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers said.

Ahir said under the ‘Jan Aushadhi’ initiative to be launched in June, a total 3,000 such generic drug stores are proposed to be opened at government district hospitals, public health centres at block level and medical colleges, in one year in the first phase.

“We plan to open 50,000 such stores over a five-year period,” the Minister said adding, “medicines will be given to the poor and ‘aam admi’ at 20 to 30 per cent cost.”

According to a PTI report, Ahir said only those who have a diploma or a degree or post-graduation in pharmacy and genuine NGOs with credibility would be given opportunity to run these stores.

His ministry would give a subsidy of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh to those selected to run these stores towards expenses to buy computer and show-case, Ahir said.
